Americans spend a lot of time worrying about obesity. Should we really be focusing on fitness?That’s the conclusion of a new meta-study, which concludes that, rather than excess pounds, it may be a lack of exercise that shortens one’s life. It finds “fit individuals who are overweight or obese are not automatically at higher risk” of premature death.“Much more attention should be given to promoting physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness as a means to reduce risk for disease and death,” writes a research team led by Vaughn Barry of Middle Tennessee State University.
